First published by the Great Smoky Mountains Association in 1957 and still in print today, the Mountain Makin’s in the Smokies cookbook has sold tens of thousands of copies over the past 60 years. While there are nearly 20 pages devoted to cornbread and similar fare, Mountain Makin’s also includes recipes for dumplings, candy, gravy, pancakes and groundhog. There are even home remedies for whooping cough, ringworm, winter inertia and other maladies. Beautifully illustrated by Patsy Gilbert, an acclaimed painter with works displayed in galleries all over the world.
